Ultra High Performance ConcretesBecause of the limited tensile strength and brittleness of ultra high performance concrete, it was natural for researchers to investigate the use of steel fibers to overcome these deficiencies. The characteristics of each of the three major types of ultra high performance fiber-reinforced concrete are described, and the current state of the research into each type is summarized.

A Prestressed Partially Precast SystemIn precast construction, there are many one-way prestressed or steel-concrete composite solutions, but there are almost no such solutions that provide two-way action. In this article, an innovative prestressed partially precast structural system for construction of long-span, two-way slabs with high span-to-depth ratios is described. Prestressed precast slabs with shear reinforcement extending out of the slab are used as bottom formwork to support the cast-in-place upper portion of the slab that is placed after orthotropic and negative bending reinforcement are added at the site.

Concrete Dumping Height SpecificationIf the dumping height is too large for the construction procedures, mixture, and reinforcement congestion, the most evident defects are honeycombs. To provide a tool to define an acceptable dumping height that will assure that the amount of honeycombing is within a permissible limit, the Concrete Casting Committee of the Instituto del Cemento y del Hormigón de Chile (ICH) developed Technical Specification ET 002-05, “Dumping Height of Concrete when Casting Vertical Elements.” This performance specification allows greater dumping heights that can lead to greater productivity without compromisin

Over the NeighborsIn New York City, space is very limited and costly, so it’s not uncommon to supplement the maximum floor area permitted for a specific zoning lot by purchasing the air rights for adjacent lots. For minimal disruption to the normal building methods and schedule, the designer of a new luxury residential structure used diagonal columns and a post-tensioned slab to support 16 floors cantilevered over a neighboring building.
